How to protect yourself from a spraying Pensacola skunk
One of the best-known facts about Pensacola skunks is their proclivity to spray. Their anal glands release a noxious substance that lingers for days. They are not aggressive animals and will not go out of their way to spray people or animals. They are not able to spray twice in a row. It takes a few minutes for the glands to fill with fluid again. Skunks can spray even after they are dead. If their anal glands are still full, you need to make sure that you do not put pressure on it.
Why do Florida skunks spray?
Skunks spray to protect themselves. If they do not feel threatened they will not spray. In order to protect yourself from getting sprayed it is important to avoid sudden movements. Skunks have very bad eyesight and will not be able to see you if you stand still. Move away slowly to make sure that you are clear of the spray radius. Make sure to keep a flashlight with you if you go out at night. The skunk will rather run than confront you.
Warning signs
The spray glands are located on the anus of the skunk. This means that they will have to turn around and lift their tail before they can spray you. They will also stomp their feet and make a hissing sound before they turn around. This should give you enough time to get away.
Getting rid of the smell
The fluid that Pensacola skunks spray can cause temporary blindness. If it hits your face, your eyes will burn. It is important to wash your eyes with fresh water immediately. There are a variety of old wives’ tales that promise to get rid of the smell. Few of them actually work.
• Do not enter your home still wearing the clothes that have been sprayed. The smell will linger. Try taking the clothes off and put it in a plastic bag before going inside. Mix baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and dishwashing liquid with some water. Pour the mixture over the clothes. It should help eliminate the smell.
• You can also apply the mixture to your skin. Leave it on for at least five minutes before washing it off.
• There are products available over the counter that you can use to wash the smell off. If you live in an area with lots of Florida skunks, you might want to keep some on hand.
• Tomato juice does not work. It simply masks the odor.
