Pensacola Wildlife Education: How To Use One-Way Exclusion Funnels To Remove Rodents Without Trapping Them
Having rodents in your home can leave you open to all sorts of problems. The rodents may carry disease or simply chew through and destroy items in your attic, walls, or other areas of your home. At the very least, they will leave behind waste products that can cause a foul smell and be hard to eliminate. The best way to minimize the risk of these things happening is removing the rodents as soon as you discover them. Many people turn to snap traps to get rid of them, but if you prefer a method that keeps the animals alive, one-way exclusion devices are a great option and easy to use.
Funnels Vs Doors
There are two main types of exclusion devices that can be used for rodents. If you have tried to exclude other, slightly larger animals in the past, then you may have a typical one-way exclusion door. These work well on animals like squirrels, but rats and other rodents won’t always use them ideally. That is because they rely on the rodent pushing on the door to open it up. Many are timid and won’t do this, leaving you with a problem.
Because of that, most experts suggest that you use a one-way exclusion funnel as opposed to a typical exclusion door when dealing with rodents. Provided the funnel is constructed and set up properly, rodents will nearly always go through it.
Setting Up The Funnel
The main challenge with using a one-way exclusion funnel to remove rodents as an alternative to trapping is setting it up. You need to begin by finding every single one of their entry points and determining which is the most popular. After that, you must seal up all the entrances except the main one. Construct an exclusion funnel and place it properly on this exit This is another challenge since the hole to exit must be just large enough for the rodents to leave without letting them get back inside.
Hiring A Professional
Although you can use a one-way exclusion funnel to get rid of rodents yourself, most people aren’t necessarily successful if they try this as a DIY project. Professionals know the most likely places to find these entrances and can spot signs like grease or droppings that indicate which ones are more commonly used. This ensures that you properly seal all holes so the animals don’t return. Experts can also set up the funnel in the right spot and make sure it is the ideal size to take care of your rat problem. If you do this yourself, you would have to make a not-so-educated guess, but professionals can go based on experience.
